work life balance

It’s exactly 8.30pm and you just got home after a long day at work.

The traffic was ridiculous today; a 45 minute drive took you 3 and a half hours and you’re so exhausted you could cry now. You are literally fighting back tears – some days have you like this no matter how strong you try to be.

You had to pick the kids from school on your way home and just as you’re about to pass out from exhaustion on the living room couch, your husband walks in with the announcement , “I’m hungry”.

So, you pick yourself up and head to the kitchen. With a banging head and weak knees, you stir the pot. You dish on to plates and then place the plates on the tray. You serve his food as he muffles a ‘thank you’. “Muffled” because everything is muffled when your head is banging.

Finally, you are able to lie down but you can’t rest. You thought home was supposed to be your happy place. Most days it is but not today. Today, you feel terrible; you are exhausted, your head is hurting and you are hungry. But who is asking you? Who is wondering whether you have eaten or if you need to put your feet up? Who is asking how your day was? Who is stirring your pots of food while you watch TV? Who is being to you who you are to everyone else?

Now I know this sounds like a lot of complaining because it is. I’ve had a day, okay? Allow me express. I am tired! And you know what? “It’s OK.” Woman, you have a right to be tired but guess what? Tomorrow you’ll do it all again. Yes, I will.

Not all days are like this but on the days this happens? Let it out. Call a friend, phone your sister, write a post. Find any way to let it out: you are tired and it’s okay. I really want you to hear that and if you are tired now as you read this – I want you to yell , “I’M TIRED!”

Yeahhhhhh, let it out. It’s ok and if no one told you lately – you are doing a hell of a job.

You’re up early, down late at night; you’re driving to school and sometimes back again. You have a job, you run a business, you mentor people, you raise kids, you deal with in-laws, you deal with bosses, you’re getting a master’s degree, you are taking care of your sick mother.

Your kid has a fever, you’re there, your sisters’ kid has a fever you’re also there. You’re a friend, you listen, you counsel, you pray. – YOU – only you! You are phenomenal! If you’ve handled any of the things listed above then you can handle a lousy day. Chin up! You’ve got this.

Remember that and never forget it. You are WOMAN and that is no small thing!
